Microkernels Should Support Passive Objects

چکیده

We believe that a passive object model, in which the active entities or threads migrate between passive objects, is more appropriate than an active object model, as the basic structure of a microkernel-based operating system. A passive object model provides enhanced performance and simplicity because it is more closely matched to the basic nature of microprocessors and the requirements of applications. It also provides more functionality by making the ow of control between objects a rst-class abstraction which can be examined, manipulated, and used to carry information about the operation in progress.

An Enhanced Multi-Pager Environment Support for Second Generation Microkernels

The main objective of this paper is to present a mechanism of enhanced paging support for the second generation microkernels in the form of explicit support of multi-pager environment for the tasks running in the system. Proposed mechanism is based on the intra-kernel high granularity pagers assignments per virtual address space, which allow efficient and simple dispatching of page faults to th...

Questions on User - Level Device Drivers

T HE microkernel story is full of good ideas and blind alleys. The story began with enthusiasm about the promised dramatic increase in flexibility, safety, and modularity. But over the years, enthusiasm changed to disappointment, because the first-generation microkernels were inefficient and inflexible. • Today, we observe radically new approaches to the microkernel idea that seek to avoid the ...

L4-Based Real Virtual Machines: An API Proposal

Virtual machines (VMs) recently regained attention as a solution to problems not only in high-performance computing, servers, and desktops, but in embedded systems as well. For example, network-enabled embedded systems use virtual machines to provide hardened subsystems for banking, encryption, and digital rights management. Virtual machine systems and microkernels share a common set of goals s...

DOpE - a Window Server for Real-Time and Embedded Systems

A window server used in real-time applications should be able to assure previously agreed-upon redrawing rates for a subset of windows while providing best-effort services to the remaining windows and operations such as moving windows. A window server used in embedded systems should be small and require only minimal operating system support, for example just threads and address spaces as provid...
